Surah Ibrahim – Ayah 17

*_Today’s Thought for the day is from Surah Ibrahim Ayah 17_*
ا

*_He will sip it unwillingly, hardly able to swallow it. Death will come at him from all directions, yet he will not die. And ahead of him will be a harsh punishment.(17)_*

The Ayah describes the severe punishments of all types that will come towards the obstinate tyrant each one of which will be so severe that he will reach the point of death, but Allah Subhanahu wa taa’la has decreed that they will not die he must take his punishment in full. But beyond this is an even sterner punishment.‼️ Hell will be looming large behind him. There he is made to drink putrefied fluids. He is violently forced to gulp it down, although he can hardly take a sip because it is both dirty and bitter. His disgust is evident from the look on his face, so much so that we can almost see it through the words of the Qur’an.

The Prophet (SAWS) said in reference to Allah’s words, “He will take it in mouth-fulls and gulp it down,” that

“As he swallows it, it will cut his intestine into pieces that will emerge from his rear” (Ibn Jarir).

Another hadith further elaborates it. Transmitted by Abu Umamah, and preserved in Ahmad, Tirmidhi, Nasa`i and Hakim, who declared it as Sahih, it says,

“It (the drink) will be brought to him. (Initially) he will reject it. As it is brought closer, it will burn his face and the scalp will fall off. Finally, when he drinks it, it will cut his intestine to pieces until it passes out through his anus” (Alusi).

*_Act of the Day is:_* to understand and imagine the severity of punishment meted out to the inhabitants and seek refuge from it by becoming obedient and following the commands of Allah Subhanahu wa taa’la.‼️ If they suffered that punishment while in this world, they would have died a long time ago because of the severity of that punishment. And they really hope that death will come and take them because they can’t take it anymore. Imagine that while in this world they do not want to die but in the afterlife they wish they would just die. But they will never die because there is no more death in the afterlife. They can only get sick but they don’t die. Because if they die, then there is no more punishment, but God will continue to punish them. Then they will not be turned off so that they continue to receive punishment.

*_May Allah Subhanahu wa taa’la grant us relief and save a from punishment of the Qabr and Hell. Aameen ya Rabbul Aa’lameen._*
