A brief introduction to Surah Nahl

*_A Brief Introduction to Surah 16 An-Nahl_*

It is the Sixteenth chapter of the Qur’an. This Surah has been called *_Al-Nahl,_* that is, the *_Honey bee_* because it mentions it as a unique Divine marvel. It is named after the bee mentioned in Ayat 68 and 69. The Surah depicts Allah Azzawajal’s creative power. Everything in the universe points to Allah Azzawajal and is in perfect balance. Another name for this Surah is Surah Al-Ni`am. (Qurtubi) The word Ni’am is the plural of Ni’mah (blessing) because the great blessings of Allah Ta’ ala have been particularly mentioned in this Surah.

*_Period of Revelation:_* Makkan Period during the third stage of the Prophet Muhammad’s(SAWS ) mission when the persecution was at its peak. The persecution from the unbelievers had forced some Muslims to migrate to Habsha.

*_Central Theme_*

All the topics of the Surah revolve round different aspects of the Message, ie., refutation of shirk, proof of Tauhid, and warning of the consequences of the rejection of and opposition and antagonism to the Message.
This Surah presents very convincing proofs of Tawhid and refutation of shirk based on plain signs in the universe and in man’s own creation. It answers the objections of the disbelievers, refutes their arguments and removes their doubts. It gives warning about the consequences of persisting in false ways. It presents moral changes needed in practical human life. It told the mushrikin that the belief in Allah, which they also professed, demanded that it should not be confined merely to lip service, but be exhibited in moral and practical life. Finally, it provided guidance to the Prophet and his companions about the attitude that they should adopt in facing antagonism and persecution by the disbelievers.

*Overall Message:* Surah An-Nahl emphasizes the importance of faith, morality, and accountability, while highlighting Allah Azzawajal’s power, wisdom, and mercy.

*_May Allah Subhanahu wa taa’la strengthen our Imaan and grant us the ability to ponder, reflect and take benefit from its Message. Aa’meen Ya’Rabbul Aa’lameen._*
