English Translation of Al-Quran

[12].Surah Yusuf [Joseph]

Ayat 16. And they came to their father in the early part of the night weeping.

Ayat 17. They said: “O our father! We went racing with one another, and left Yusuf (Joseph) by our belongings and a wolf devoured him; but you will never believe us even when we speak the truth.”

Tafseer of Surah Yusuf (PBUH) Ayat 16 & 17. Then they came to their father in the early part of the night, weeping. The plotters were ready with their false tale for their father, but in order to make it appear plausible, they came sometime after sundown, to show that they had made an effort to search for their brother and save him. 17. They said: “O our father! We went racing with one another, and left Joseph with our things; and the wolf devoured him…. But thou wilt never believe us even though we tell the truth. “They wanted to make out that they were not negligent of Joseph. They were naturally having games and exercise, while the boy was left with their belongings. It was the racing that prevented them from seeing the wolf. And Jacob’s fears about the wolf ( 12:13 above) made them imagine that he would swallow the wolf story readily. They were surprised that Jacob received the story about the wolf with cold incredulity. So they grew petulant, put on an air of injured innocence, and brought out the blood-stained garment described in the next verse.

English Translation of Hadith

Hazrat Wabisah bin Ma`bad (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: I went to Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) and he asked me, “Have you come to inquire about piety?” I replied in the affirmative. Then he said, “Ask your heart regarding it. Piety is that which contents the soul and comforts the heart, and sin is that which causes doubts and perturbs the heart, even if people pronounce it lawful and give you verdicts on such matters again and again.”

[Masnad Ahmad, Imam Ahmad Hadith # 228/4].

Lesson : as mentioned above in Surah Yusuf Ayat 17“but you will never believe us even when we speak the truth.” There are two points about this Hadith. First, it is one of the miracles of Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) who discovered the nature of the question before it was put to him. Second, man’s heart is the biggest guide to him and he, therefore, should keep his heart illuminated with the light of Faith so as to continue receiving guidance from it.
