English Translation of Al-Quran

[12].Surah Yusuf [Joseph]

Ayat 89. He said: “Do you know what you did with Yusuf (Joseph) and his brother, when you were ignorant?”

Ayat 90. They said: “Are you indeed Yusuf (Joseph) ?” He said: “I am Yusuf (Joseph), and this is my brother (Benjamin). Allah has indeed been gracious to us. Verily, he who fears Allah with obedience to Him (by abstaining from sins and evil deeds, and by performing righteous good deeds), and is patient, then surely, Allah makes not the reward of the Muhsinun (good-doers) to be lost.”

Tafseer of Surah Yusuf Ayat 89 & 90. He said: “Know ye how ye dealt with Joseph and his brother, not knowing (what ye were doing)?” Joseph now wants to reveal himself and touch their conscience. He had but to remind them of the true facts as to their treatment of their brother Joseph, whom they pretended to have lost. He had by now also learnt from Benjamin what slights and injustice he too had suffered at their hands after Joseph’s protection had been removed from him in their home. Had not Joseph himself seen them but too prone to believe the worst of Benjamin and to say the worst of Joseph? But Joseph would be charitable-not only in the sense which they meant when they asked for a charitable grant of grain, but in a far higher sense. He would forgive them and put the most charitable construction on what they did-that they knew not what they were doing! 90. They said: “Art thou indeed Joseph?” He said, “I am Joseph, and this is my brother: Allah has indeed been gracious to us (all): behold, he that is righteous and patient,- never will Allah suffer the reward to be lost, of those who do right.” Their father’s words, the way events were shaping themselves, Joseph’s questionings, perhaps Benjamin’s manner now-not a slave kept in subjection but one in perfect love and understanding with this great Wazir-perhaps also a recollection of Joseph’s boyish dream-all these things had prepared their minds and they ask the direct question. “Art thou Joseph?” They get the direct reply. “Yes. I am Joseph; and if you have still any doubt of my identity, here is Benjamin: ask him. We have suffered much, but patience and right conduct are at last rewarded by Allah!”

English Translation of Hadith

Hazrat Abu Said Al-Khudri (May Allah be pleased with him) reported that: Certain people of the Ansar asked the Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) and he gave them; then they again asked him and he gave them until all what he possessed was exhausted. Then the Prophet [SAWW](PBUH) said, “Whatever wealth I have, I will not withhold from you. Whosoever would be chaste and modest; Allah will keep him chaste and modest and whosoever would seek self-sufficiency, Allah will make him self-sufficient; and whosoever would be patient, Allah will give him patience, and no one is granted a gift better and more comprehensive than patience”.

[Al-Bukhari Vol 2, Book 24, Hadith # 548].

Lesson : as mentioned above in Surah Yusuf Ayat 90. “Verily, he who fears Allah with obedience to Him, and is patient, then surely,” Besides describing generosity, kindness, munificence and nobility of the Prophet [SAWW](PBUH), he has been ordained by Allah to adopt patience, contentment and self-respect and to avoid anyone’s favour.
