*_Today’s Thought for the day is from Surah Al-Isra Ayah 34_*
*_”And do not come near the wealth of the orphan, except with what is best until he reaches maturity. And fulfil the covenant. Indeed, the covenant will be questioned.”(34)_*
The Ayah makes a special case *concerning the property of an orphan,* ensuring its full protection.‼️ *It forbids the mere coming near it except for what is best for the orphan*. That is because *an orphan is too weak to manage his property or defend it against assault*. Hence, the *Muslim community* is required to take proper care of the orphan and his property until he comes of age and is able to take care of his own affairs.
Islam makes it clear that a Muslim’s life, honour and property are to be protected and preserved. The Prophet SAWS says: *“Everything that belongs to a Muslim is forbidden to be taken away by another: his blood, honour and property.” [Related by alBukhārī, Muslim, Mālik and Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī]*
_Then this commandment was extended to cover the cases of all those citizens who were unable to safeguard their own rights. *The Holy Prophet SAWS himself declared, “I am the guardian of the one who has no guardian”.* And this is the basis of many rules and regulations of the Islamic Law._
_*”Fulfilment of pledges”* was not meant to be merely a moral instruction for individuals but afterwards when the Islamic State was established, this became the guiding principle for the conduct of all internal; and external affairs by the individuals and the Community._ (Read S6:A152 and S2:A220)
*_Act for the Day is:_* _To take extra care of ourself if an orphan’s property is being handled at all. *It should be to improve it, or to give him something better than he or she had before.*_ Looking after an orphan’s property is an *act of trust* which constitutes a *pledge by the whole community*. Hence, it is followed with an order to honour all promises and pledges._Never to take a personal advantage for the benefit of the guardian. Safeguard it until the orphan attains the full age of understanding, as we know for sure, we will have to give account of every engagement on the day of reckoning, and Allah Azzawajal is very strict in taking account._ Islam attaches great importance to the fulfilment of promises and pledges and to being true to one’s trust because this is the essence of honesty and integrity, both personal and social levels.
*_May Allah Subhanahu wa taa’la grant us the ability to fulfil our pledges and maintain the trust both at individual and social life. Aa’meen Ya’Rabbul Aa’lameen._*
JazaK Allâhu Khair!
