English Translation of Al-Quran
[37].Surah As-Saffat (Those Ranged in Ranks)
Ayat 50. Then they will turn to one another, mutually questioning.
Ayat 51. A speaker of them will say: “Verily, I had a companion (in the world),
Ayat 52. Who used to say: “Are you among those who believe (in resurrection after death).
Ayat 53. “(That) when we die and become dust and bones, shall we indeed (be raised up) to receive reward or punishment (according to our deeds)?”
Ayat 54. (The man) said: “Will you look down?”
Ayat 55. So, he looked down and saw him in the midst of the Fire.
Ayat 56. He said: “By Allah! You have nearly ruined me.
Ayat 57. “Had it not been for the Grace of my Lord, I would certainly have been among those brought forth (to Hell).”
Tafseer of Surah As-Saffat (Those Ranged in Ranks) Ayat 50. Then they will turn to one another and question one another. Cf. above, 37:27, where the same phrase is used in the reverse conditions. In each case there is a going back to the earlier memories or experiences of this life. Ayat 51. One of them will start the talk and say: “I had an intimate companion (on the earth), this companion was a skeptic, who laughed at Religion and a Hereafter. How the tables are now turned! The devout man backed up his Faith with a good life and is now in Bliss: the other was a cynic and made a mess of his life, and is now burning in the Fire. Ayat 52. “Who used to say, ´what! Art thou amongst those who bear witness to the Truth (of the Message)? Ayat 53. “When we die and become dust and bones, shall we indeed receive rewards and punishments? ´” Ayat 54. (A voice) said: “Would you like to look down?” Ayat 55. He looked down and saw him in the midst of the Fire. He is allowed a peep into the state which he so narrowly escaped by the grace of Allah. Ayat 56. He said: “By Allah. Thou were little short of bringing me to perdition! Ayat 57. “Had it not been for the Grace of my Lord, I should certainly have been among those brought there)! And he gratefully acknowledges his shortcomings: “I should have been a sinner just like this, but for the grace of Allah!” He sees that if he had erred it would have been no excuse to plead the other man’s example. He had Faith and was saved, to walk in the path of righteousness.
English Translation of Hadith
Hazrat Salamah bin Al-Akwa` (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah ﷺ [SAWW](PBUH) said, “Man continues to display haughtiness and arrogance until he is recorded among the arrogant and will be therefore afflicted with what afflicts them.”
[At-Tirmidhi Hadith # 2000].
Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah As-Saffat Ayat 53. “(That) when we die and become dust and bones, shall we indeed (be raised up) to receive reward or punishment (according to our deeds)?” To adopt the habits and manners of good people is deemed to be desirable. But, on the contrary, to take to the bad ways of bad people is considered undesirable. A man will ultimately be counted among those people whom he will take as a model to emulate, because he is gradually fitted into their framework and assimilates all of their qualities. Quite naturally then retribution will be administered to him accordingly.
