English Translation of Al-Quran
[37].Surah As-Saffat (Those Ranged in Ranks)
Ayat 62. Is that (Paradise) better entertainment or the tree of Zaqqum (a horrible tree in Hell)?
Ayat 63. Truly We have made it (as) a trail for the Zalimun (polytheists, disbelievers, wrong-doers, etc.).
Ayat 64. Verily, it is a tree that springs out of the bottom of Hell-fire,
Ayat 65. The shoots of its fruit-stalks are like the heads of Shayatin (devils);
Ayat 66. Truly, they will eat thereof and fill their bellies therewith.
Ayat 67. Then on the top of that they will be given boiling water to drink so that it becomes a mixture (of boiling water and Zaqqum in their bellies).
Ayat 68. Then thereafter, verily, their return is to the flaming fire of Hell.
Tafseer of Surah As-Saffat (Those Ranged in Ranks) Ayat 62 to 68. Is that the better entertainment or the Tree of Zaqqum? Cf. 17:60, This bitter tree of Hell is a symbol of the contrast with the beautiful Garden of heaven with its delicious fruits. Ayat 63. For We have truly made it (as) a trial for the wrong-doers. Cf. 44:43-46.This dreadful bitter Tree of Hell is truly a trial to the wrongdoers. (1) It grows at the bottom of Hell; (2) even its fruit-stalks, which should have been tender, are like the heads of devils; (3) its produce is eaten voraciously; (4) on top of it is a boiling mixture to cut up their entrails (see next note); and (5) every time they complete this round of orgies they return to the same game. A truly lurid picture, but more lurid in reality are the stages in spiritual Evil. (1) It takes its rise in the lowest depths of corrupted human nature; (2) its tender’s affections are degraded to envy and hate: (3) the appetite for Evil grows with what it feeds on; (4) its “cures” serve but to aggravate the disease; and (5) the chain of evil is unending; one round is followed by another in interminable succession. Ayat 64. For it is a tree that springs out of the bottom of Hell-Fire: Ayat 65. The shoots of its fruit-stalks are like the heads of devils: Ayat 66. Truly they will eat thereof and fill their bellies therewith. The parable of fruits and drinks in the contrasted fortunes of the Good and the Evil is further Ayat 67. Then on top of that they will be given a mixture made of boiling water. Ayat 68. Then shall their return be to the (Blazing) Fire. When they eat of the Zaqqum in the lowest depths of hell, they are apparently brought up to drink of the mixture as a further punishment, after which they go back to repeat the round.
English Translation of Hadith
Hazrat Ibn Masud (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ [SAWW](PBUH) said, “Hell will be brought on that Day (the Day of Resurrection) with seventy thousand bridles; and with every bridle will be seventy thousand angels, pulling it”.
[Muslim Book 40, Chapter 12, Hadith # 6810]
Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah As-Saffat Ayat 68. Then thereafter, verily, their return is to the flaming fire of Hell” This Hadith deals with the hidden matters relating to the Unseen world. Muslims are ordained by Allah to believe in them. It is wrong to hold them as metaphorical. They are realities but we cannot imagine them.
