English Translation of Al-Quran
[41]. Ha-Mim_Al-Sajdah (Prostration) also known as Surah Fussilat [They Are Explained in Detail]
Ayat 34. The good deed and the evil deed cannot be equal. Repel (the evil) with one which is better (i.e. Allah ordered the faithful believers to be patient at the time of anger, and to excuse those who treat them badly), then verily! he, between whom and you there was enmity, (will become) as though he was a close friend.
Ayat 35. But none is granted it (the above quality) except those who are patient, and none is granted it except the owner of the great portion (of the happiness in the Hereafter i.e. Paradise and in this world of a high moral character).
Tafseer of Surah Ha-Mim Al-Sajdah (or Surah Fussilat) Ayat 34 and 35. Nor can goodness and Evil be equal. Repel (Evil) with what is better: Then will he between whom and you was hatred become as if they were thy friend and intimate! You do not return good for evil, for there is no equality or comparison between the two. You repel or destroy evil with something which is far better, just as an antidote is better than poison. You foil hatred with love. You repel ignorance with knowledge, folly and wickedness with the friendly message of Revelation. The man who was in the bondage of sin, you not only liberate from sin, but made him your greatest friend and helper in the cause of Allah! Such is the alchemy of the Word of Allah! (Cf. 23:96, 28:54, and 42:40). Ayat 35. And no one will be granted such goodness except those who exercise patience and self-restraint, none but persons of the greatest good fortune. The moral standard referred to in the last verse can only be reached by the exercise of the highest patience and self-restraint. All sorts of human weaknesses and counsels of pseudo-wisdom and “self-respect” will keep breaking in, but resist them as suggestions of Evil (see next verse). If you reach anywhere near that high standard, you will be indeed most fortunate in a spiritual sense, for Allah’s Revelation will have made you great and free.
English Translation of Hadith
Hazrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ [SAWW](PBUH) said, “If anyone calls others to follow right guidance, his reward will be equivalent to those who follow him (in righteousness) without their reward being diminished in any respect, and if anyone invites others to follow error, the sin, will be equivalent to that of the people who follow him (in sinfulness) without their sins being diminished in any respect”.
[Muslim Book # 06, Chapter 34, Hadith # 6470].
Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah Ha-Mim_Al-Sajdah Ayat 34 “Repel (the evil) with one which is better” Invitation’ and `Call’ stand to mean here that someone induces others to virtue or seduces to sin by means of his speech or action. We come to know from this Hadith that one who becomes a medium for either of them is given a reward or punishment respectively by Allah (SWT).
