[36].Surah Yaseen [Yaseen]

Ayat 18. They (people) said: “For us, we see an evil omen from you, if you cease not, we will surely stone you, and a painful torment will touch you from us.”

Ayat 19. They (Messengers) said: “Your evil omens be with you! (Do you call it “evil omen”) because you are admonished? Nay, but you are a people Musrifun (transgressing all bounds by committing all kinds of great sins and by disobeying Allah).

Tafseer of Surah Yaseen, Ayat 18 and 19. The (people) said: “for us, we augur an evil omen from you: if ye desist not, we will certainly stone you. And a grievous punishment indeed will be inflicted on you by us.”  Ta’ir means a bird. Like the Roman augurs, the Arabs had a superstition about deriving omens from birds. Cf. the English word auspicious, from the Latin avis, a bird, and species, I see. From Ta’ir (bird) came tatayyara, or ittayyara, to draw evil omens. Because the prophets of Allah denounced evil, the evildoers thought that they brought ill-luck to them. As a matter of fact any evil that happened to them was the result of their own ill-deeds. Cf. 17:13, where the Egyptians ascribed their calamities to the ill-luck brought by Moses: and 27:47, where Thamud ascribed ill-luck to the preaching of Salih. Ayat 19. They said: “Your evil omens are with yourselves: (deem ye this an evil omen). If ye are admonished? Nay, but ye are a people transgressing all bounds!” ‘What ye call omens arise from your own ill-deeds. Do you suppose that a man who comes to warn you and teach you the better way brings you ill-luck? Fie upon you! (Cf. 17:13 ). To call Good evil and accuse of falsehood men of truth who come unselfishly to bring the message of the beneficent Mercy of Allah, is the very height of extravagance and transgression.

English Translation of Hadith

Hazrat Aisha (May Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ [SAWW](PBUH) came out during the night and observed (TARAWEEH) prayer in the mosque and some of the people prayed along with him. When it was morning, the people talked about this and so a large number of people gathered there. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ [SAWW](PBUH) went out for the second night, and they (the people) prayed along with him. When it was morning, the people began to talk about it. So the mosque thronged with people on the third night. He (the Holy Prophet ﷺ [SAWW](PBUH) ) came out and they prayed along with him. When it was the fourth night, the mosque was filled to its utmost capacity but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ [SAWW](PBUH) did not come out. Some people among them cried:” Prayer.” But the Messenger of Allah ﷺ [SAWW](PBUH) did not come to them till he came out for the morning prayer. When he had completed the morning prayer, he turned his face to the people and recited Tashahhud (I bear testimony that there is no god but Allah and I bear testimony that Muhammad is His Messenger) and then said: Your affair was not hidden from me in the night, but I was afraid that (my observing prayer continuously) might make the night (TARAWEEH) prayer obligatory for you and you might be unable to perform it.
