Ramadan Special (Part 2) Daily Qur’an & Hadith (23 March 2023)

English Translation of Al-Quran

[02].Surah Al-Baqarah [The Cow]

Ayat 185. The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong). So whoever of you sights (the crescent on the first night of) the month (of Ramadan i.e. is present at his home), he must observe Saum (fasts) that month, and whoever is ill or on a journey, the same number [of days which one did not observe Saum (fasts) must be made up] from other days. Allah intends for you ease, and He does not want to make things difficult for you. (He wants that you) must complete the same number (of days), and that you must magnify Allah [i.e. to say Takbir (Allahu-Akbar; Allah is the Most Great) on seeing the crescent of the months of Ramadan and Shawwal] for having guided you so that you may be grateful to Him.

Tafseer of Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat Judgement (between right and wrong): Furqan the Al-Quran = the criterion or standard by which we judge between right and wrong. Allah’s revelation, the expression of Allah’s Will, is the true standard of right and wrong. It may be in a Book or in Allah’s dealings in history. All these may be called His Signs or Miracles. In this passage some commentators take the Scripture and the Criterion (Furqan) to be identical. Others take them to be two distinct things: Scripture being the written Book and the Criterion being other Signs. The word Furqan also occurs in 21:48 in connection with Moses PBUH and Aaron PBUH and in the first verse of Surah 25, as well as in its title, in connection with Muhammad  [SAWW](PBUH) . As Aaron PBUH received no Book, Furqan must mean the other Signs. Al Mustafa  [SAWW](PBUH) had both the Book and the other Signs: perhaps here too we take the other Signs as supplementing the Book. Cf. Wordsworth’s “Arbiter undisturbed of right and wrong.” The regulations are again and again coupled with an insistence on two things: (a) the facilities and concessions given, and (b) the spiritual significance of die fast, without which it is like an empty shell without a kernel. If we realize this, we shall look upon Ramadan, not as a burden, but as a blessing, and shall be duly grateful for the lead given to us in this matter

English Translation of Hadith

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) said, “Do not observe Saum (fasting) for a day or two days preceding Ramadan. However, if a person is in the habit of observing Saum on a particular day (which may fall on these dates), he may fast on that day.”

[Muslim Book 6, Hadith Number 2382].

Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah Baqarah Ayat 185.”So whoever of you sights (the crescent on the first night of) the month (of Ramadan i.e. is present at his home), he must observe Saum (fasts) that month,” “However, if a person is in the habit of observing Saum on a particular day” means that if it is his routine to observe Saum on these days, then he can do so two days before the advent of Ramadan. The reason being that in that case his Saum will not be for the reception of Ramadan but a matter of routine. Some people have taken “one or two days before” to mean the first two days of the second half of Shawwal on the grounds that some Ahadith contain prohibition of observing Saum in the second fortnight of Shawwal. Because of this injunction, it is not permissible to observe Saum in these days, except in case it is one’s routine.

Ramadan Special (Part-1) Daily Qur’an & Hadith (22 March 2023)

English Translation of Al-Quran

[02].Surah Al-Baqarah [The Cow]

Ayat 183. O you who believe! Observing As-Saum (the fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqun (the pious).

Ayat 184. [Observing Saum (fasts)] for a fixed number of days, but if any of you is ill or on a journey, the same number (should be made up) from other days. And as for those who can fast with difficulty, (e.g. an old man, etc.), they have (a choice either to fast or) to feed a Miskin (poor person) (for every day). But whoever does good of his own accord, it is better for him. And that you fast, it is better for you if only you know.

Tafseer of Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat & 184 “O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that ye may (learn) self-restraint, – As it was prescribed: this does not mean that the Muslim fast is like the other fasts previously observed, in the number of days, in the time or manner of the fast, or in other incidents; it only means that the principle of self-denial by fasting is not a new one. 184. (Fasting) for a fixed number of days; but if any of you is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed number (Should be made up) from days later. For those who can do it (With hardship), is a ransom, the feeding of one that is indigent. But he that will give more, of his own free will, – it is better for him. And it is better for you that ye fast, if ye only knew. This verse should be read with the following verses, 185-188, in order that the incidents of the physical fast may be fully understood with reference to its spiritual meaning. The Muslim fast is not meant for self-torture. Although it is stricter than other fasts, it also provides alleviations for special circumstances. If it were merely a temporary abstention from food and drink, it would be salutary to many people, who habitually eat and drink to excess. The instincts for food, drink, and sex are strong in the animal nature, and temporary restraint from all these enables the attention to be directed to higher things. This is necessary through prayer, contemplation and acts of charity, not of the showy kind, but by seeking out those really in need. Certain standards are prescribed, but much higher standards are recommended. For journeys, a minimum standard of three marches is prescribed by some Commentators; others make it more precise by naming a distance of 16 farsakhs, equivalent to 48 miles. A journey of 8 or 9 miles on foot is more tiring than a similar one by bullock cart. There are various degrees of fatigue in riding a given distance on horseback or by camel or in a comfortable train or by motor car or by steamer, airplane, or airship. In my opinion the standard must depend on the means of locomotion and on the relative resources of the travelers. It is better to determine it in each case according to circumstances. Those who can do it with hardship; such as aged people, or persons specially circumstanced. The Shafi’i school would include a woman expecting a child, or one who is nursing a baby, but on this point opinion is not unanimous, some holding that they ought to put in the fasts later, when they can.

English Translation of Hadith

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: The Messenger of Allah  [SAWW](PBUH) said, “Do not observe Saum (fasting) before the advent of Ramadan. Observe Saum at sighting of the crescent of Ramadan and terminate it at sighting the crescent (of Shawwal). If the sky is overcast, complete (the month as) thirty (days).” [At-Tirmidhi Hadith # 688].

Lesson : as mentioned above in Surah Baqarah Ayat 184. “[Observing Saum (fasts)] for a fixed number of days,)”. From this Hadith we learn “Before the advent of Ramadan” here signifies the second half of Shawwal. That is, one should not observe voluntary Saum after 15th of Shaban so that one’s vitality is maintained for the Saum of Ramadan approaching near. If the moon is not sighted due to clouds, then observing Saum should be started after completing thirty days of Sha`ban. Similarly, if the moon of the of Shawwal is not sighted, then thirty days of fasting Ramadan must be completed before celebrating `Eid-ul-Fitr.

Surah Al Naml Ayat 83 & 84 Daily Qur’an & Hadith (22 March 2023)

English Translation of Al-Quran

[27].Surah Al-Naml [The Ants]

Ayat 83. And (remember) the Day when We shall gather out of every nation a troop of those who denied Our Ayat (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), and (then) they (all) shall be gathered (and driven to the place of reckoning).

Ayat 84. Till, when they come (before their Lord at the place of reckoning), He will say: “Did you deny My Ayat (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) when you comprehended them not in knowledge, or what (else) was it that you used to do?”

Tafseer of Surah Al Naml (The Ants) Ayat 83 & 84. One day We shall gather, together from every people a troop of those who reject our Signs, and they shall be kept in ranks,- Until, when they come (before the Judgment-seat), (Allah) will say: “Did ye reject My Signs, though ye comprehended them not in knowledge, or what was it ye did?” The charge against them will be: ‘You had no knowledge, and yet you arrogantly rejected My Signs; is that true, or have you any plea in your defense?’

English Translation of Hadith

Hazrat Usamah bin Zaid (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: Messenger of Allah  [SAWW](PBUH) said, “A man will be brought on the Day of Resurrection and will be cast into Hell, and his intestines will pour forth and he will go round them as a donkey goes round a millstone. The inmates of Hell will gather round him and say: `What has happened to you, O so-and-so? Were you not enjoining us to do good and forbidding us to do evil?’ He will reply: `I was enjoining you to do good but was not doing it myself; and I was forbidding you to do evil, but was doing it myself”.

[Al-Bukhari Book 04, Chapter 54, Hadith # 489].

Lesson : as mentioned above in Surah Al-Naml Ayat 84 “when you comprehended them not in knowledge, or what (else) was it that you used to do?” This Hadith serves a stern warning for such `Ulama’, preachers so called scholars and reformers of the Ummah whose own conduct is contrary to the sermons they give from the pulpit.

Surah Al Naml Ayat 82 Daily Qur’an & Hadith (21 March 2023)

English Translation of Al-Quran

[27].Surah Al-Naml [The Ants]

Ayat 82. And when the Word (of torment) is fulfilled against them, We shall bring out from the earth a beast to them, which will speak to them because mankind believed not with certainty in Our Ayat (Verses of the Quran and Prophet Muhammad  SAWW (PBUH).

Tafseer of Surah Al Naml (The Ants) Ayat 82. And when the Word is fulfilled against them (the unjust), we shall produce from the earth a beast to (face) them: He will speak to them, for that mankind did not believe with assurance in Our Signs. The Word: the Decree or Sentence, the Decision to end the respite and restore the true values of right and wrong in a new world: their cup of iniquity will then have been full. The Beast will be one of the Signs of the Last Day to come, before the present World passes away and the new World is brought into being. In symbolic language it would represent gross Materialism. It will be the embodiment of fat worldly triumph, which will appeal to a misguided and degenerate world, because such a corrupt world will have no assured belief in the Signs of Allah or in spiritual Light. It will itself be a Sign or Portent, closing the door of repentance. I do not know whether this Beast has any reference to the symbolism in chapter 12 of the Book of Revelation, which closes the New Testament. If taklimuhum is read instead of tukallimuhum, it would mean that the Beast would wound them, symbolically, that Materialism would produce its own Nemesis.

.

English Translation of Hadith

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) said, “Every one of my followers will be forgiven except those who expose (openly) their wrongdoings. An example of this is that of a man who commits a sin at night which Allah has covered for him, and in the morning, he would say (to people): “I committed such and such sin last night,’ while Allah had kept it a secret. During the night Allah has covered it up but in the morning he tears up the cover provided by Allah Himself.”

[Bukhari Book.08, Chapter 73, Hadith # 95].

Lesson : We learn from this Hadith that commission of a sin due to human frailties on which one is ashamed but does not like to express is something which might hopefully be forgiven by Allah. In fact, its remission after penitence is almost sure. But to commit a sin openly is totally different because, firstly, the heart of such a person is deprived of the fear of Allah. Secondly, he has no respect and regard for Divine injunctions. Thirdly, such a person usually does not repent his sins. Fourthly, he makes a declaration of breach of Divine injunctions which amounts to inviting His wrath and punishment.

Surah Al Naml Ayat 80 & 81 Daily Qur’an & Hadith (20 March 2023)

English Translation of Al-Quran

[27].Surah Al-Naml [The Ants]

Ayat 80. Verily, you cannot make the dead to hear (i.e. benefit them and similarly the disbelievers), nor can you make the deaf to hear the call, when they flee, turning their backs.

Ayat 81. Nor can you lead the blind out of their error, you can only make to hear those who believe in Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), and who have submitted (themselves to Allah in Islam as Muslims).

Tafseer of Surah Al Naml (The Ants) Ayat 80 & 81. Truly thou canst not cause the dead to listen, nor canst thou cause the deaf to hear the call, (especially) when they turn back in retreat. The Prophet’s responsibility was to preach and show the way. Men and women of good will had faith and accepted the Message. But he was not responsible for the obstinacy and perversity of men who turned away from Allah’s Signs and rejected the Truth. Nor canst thou be a guide to the blind, (to prevent them) from straying: only those wilt thou get to listen who believe in Our Signs, and they will bow in Islam.

English Translation of Hadith

Hazrat Tamim bin Aus Ad-Dari (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) said, “Ad-Deen is sincerity”. We said: “For whom?” He replied, “For Allah, His Book, His Messenger and for the leaders of the Muslims and their masses”.

[Muslim Book 01, Chapter 24, Hadith # 098]

Lesson : as mentioned above in Surah Al-Naml Ayat 81. you can only make to hear those who believe in Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), and who have submitted (themselves to Allah in Islam as Muslims). This Hadith stresses the importance and merits of general sincerity. Sincerity for Allah here means that one must have true faith in Him and He should be worshipped with full devotion and sincerity. Sincerity for the Qur’an means that one should confirm its truth with one’s full heart and mind, recite it regularly, act upon the injunctions contained in it with meticulous care and strictly avoid its misinterpretation. Sincerity of the Prophet (PBUH) means sincere confirmation of his Prophet hood, faithful obedience of his orders and adherence to his Sunnah. The goodwill of the Muslim rulers stands here for co-operating with them in their lawful orders and obedience of their such orders which are free from any trace of sin. If they deviate from the Straight Path they should be persuaded to turn to virtue. One should not revolt against them unless they commit infidelity. The goodwill of the Muslim masses means that one should work for the betterment of their life in this world and the Hereafter. They should be provided the right guidance, induced to perform good deeds and deterred from evils.

Surah Al Naml Ayat 78 & 79 Daily Qur’an & Hadith (19 March 2023)

English Translation of Al-Quran

[27].Surah Al-Naml [The Ants]

Ayat 78. Verily, your Lord will decide between them (various sects) by His Judgment. And He is the All-Mighty, the All-Knowing.

Ayat 79. So put your trust in Allah; surely, you (O Muhammad [SAWW](PBUH) are on manifest truth.

Tafseer of Surah Al Naml (The Ants) Ayat 78 & 79. Verily thy Lord will decide between them by His Decree: and He is Exalted in Might, All-Knowing. ‘Decree’: hukm: the disputes between rival sects can only be settled by the Decree of Allah-(l) in the form of a Revelation, as was done by the Qur’an, or (2) by the logic of events, for hundreds of sects have been extinguished and forgotten in the course of time, and (3) in the Decree of Judgment in the Hereafter, when all warring sects will at length see their errors. So it’s been told to Prophet SAWW (PBUH) to put thy trust in Allah. for thou art on (the path of) manifest Truth.

English Translation of Hadith

Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (May Allah be pleased with him) said “When (Prophet) Ibrahim PBUH (Abraham) was thrown into the fire, he said: “Allah (Alone) is sufficient for us, and, He is the Best Disposer of affairs.” So did the Messenger of Allah Muhammad [SAWW](PBUH) when he was told: “A great army of the pagans had gathered against him, so fear them”. But this (warning) only increased him, and the Muslims in Faith and they said: “Allah (Alone) is sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs (for us)”.

[Al-Bukhari Book 06, Chapter 60, Hadith # 086]

Lesson : as mentioned above in Surah Al-Naml Ayat 79. “put your trust in Allah; surely, you (O Muhammad [SAWW](PBUH) are on manifest truth. Even in the worst circumstances one should always have faith and trust in Allah.

Surah Al Naml Ayat 76 & 77 Daily Qur’an & Hadith (18 March 2023)

English Translation of Al-Quran

[27].Surah Al-Naml [The Ants]

Ayat 76. Verily, this Quran narrates to the Children of Israel most of that about which they differ.

Ayat 77. And truly, it (this Quran) is a guide and a mercy to the believers.

Tafseer of Surah Al Naml (The Ants) Ayat 76. Verily this Quran doth explain to the Children of Israel most of the matters in which they disagree. The Jews had numerous sects. Some were altogether out of the pale, e.g., the Samaritans, who had a separate Tawrah of their own: they hated the other Jews and were hated by them. But even in the orthodox body, there were several sects, of which the following may be mentioned: (1) the Pharisees, who were literalists, formalists, and fatalists, and had a large body of traditional literature, with which they overlaid the Law of Moses; (2) the Sadducees, who were rationalists, and seemed to have doubted the doctrine of the Resurrection or of a Hereafter; (3) the Essenes, who practiced a sort of Communism and Asceticism and prohibited marriage. About many of their doctrines they had bitter disputes, which were settled by the Qur’an, which supplemented and perfected the Law of Moses. It also clearly explained the attributes of Allah and the nature of Revelation, and the doctrine of the Hereafter. And it certainly is a Guide and a Mercy to those who believe.

English Translation of Hadith

Hazrat Umar bin Al-Khattab (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) said, “Verily, Allah elevates some people with this Qur’an and abases others.”

[Muslim Book 04, Chapter 138, Hadith # 1780]

Lesson : as mentioned above in Surah Al-Naml Ayat 77. “And truly, it (this Quran) is a guide and a mercy to the believers” Only such people will be elevated who act upon the teachings of the Qur’an and abstain from what is forbidden by Allah. The Muslims of the early centuries of Islam were blessed with great honour by Allah because they loved and applied the Qur’an. Because of this meaningful attachment with the Qur’an, they made great achievements in religious and worldly spheres. Those who neglected the teachings of Islam will be disgraced and humiliated. May Allah guide and enable us to re-establish our contact with the Qur’an so that we can regain our past glory. Exaltation and humiliation mentioned in the Hadith is bound to happen in both this life and the Hereafter.

Surah Al Naml Ayat 74 to 75 Daily Qur’an & Hadith (17 March 2023)

English Translation of Al-Quran

[27].Surah Al-Naml [The Ants]

Ayat 74. And verily, your Lord knows what their breasts conceal and what they reveal.

Ayat 75. And there is nothing hidden in the heaven and the earth, but is in a Clear Book (i.e. Al-Lauh Al-Mahfuz).

Tafseer of Surah Al Naml (The Ants) Ayat 74 & 75. And verily thy Lord know the all that their hearts do hide. As well as all that they reveal. Nor is there aught of the unseen, in heaven or earth, but is (recorded) in a clear record.

English Translation of Hadith

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: When it was revealed to The Messenger of Allah  [SAWW](PBUH), “To Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on the earth, and whether you disclose what is in your own selves or conceal it, Allah will call you to account for it,” the Companions of Messenger of Allah (PBUH) felt it hard and severe and they came to Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) and sat down on their knees and said: “O Messenger of Allah, we were assigned some duties which were within our power to perform, such as Salat (prayer), Saum (fasting), Jihad (striving in the Cause of Allah), Sadaqah (charity). Then this (the above mentioned) Verse was revealed to you and it is beyond our power to live up to it.” The Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) said, “Do you want to say what the people of two Books (Jews and Christians) said before you: ‘We hear and disobey?’ You should rather say: ‘We hear and we obey, we seek forgiveness, our Rubb and unto You is the return.”’ And they said: “We hear and we obey, (we seek) Your forgiveness, our Rubb! And unto You is the return.” When the people recited it and it smoothly flowed on their tongues. [Muslim].

Lesson : as mentioned above in Surah Al-Naml Ayat 74. “your Lord knows what their breasts conceal and what they reveal” We learn from this Hadith that initially every person was answerable for thoughts and doubts, even those which crossed his mind; something on which nobody had any control. The Companions of the Prophet (PBUH) were naturally disturbed by this situation. But when they heard and obeyed the orders of the Prophet  [SAWW](PBUH).

Surah Al Naml Ayat 71 to 73 Daily Qur’an & Hadith (16 March 2023)

English Translation of Al-Quran

[27].Surah Al-Naml [The Ants]

Ayat 71. And they (the disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah) say: “When (will) this promise (be fulfilled), if you are truthful?”

Ayat 72. (O Muhammad SAWW PBUH) Say: “Perhaps that which you wish to hasten on, may be close behind you.

Ayat 73. “Verily, your Lord is full of Grace for mankind, yet most of them do not give thanks.”

Tafseer of Surah Al Naml (The Ants) Ayat 71, 72 & 73 They disbelievers also say: “When will this promise (come to pass)? (Say) if you are truthful.” Say: “It may be that some of the events which you wish to hasten on may be (close) in your pursuit!” The Unbelievers—or even men of halfhearted faith-may say, “Why worry over distant future events? Take the day as it comes!” But that is a fallacy. Judgment is certain, and it may be that this very hour may be the hour of doom for any given individual. This is the hour of repentance and amendment. For Allah wishes well to all mankind in spite of their ingratitude. But verily thy Lord is full of grace to mankind: Yet most of them are ungrateful.

English Translation of Hadith

Hazrat Rifaah bin Rafi Az-Zuraqi (May Allah be pleased with him) said: Jibril (Gabriel) came to the Prophet [SAWW](PBUH) and asked him: “How do you estimate among you those who participated in the battle of Badr?” He [SAWW] replied, “They were the best of Muslims” (or he may have said something similar to that). Jibril said: “The same is the case with the angels who were at Badr.” [Al-Bukhari Hadith # 3992].

Lesson : as mentioned above in Surah Al-Naml Ayat 72. “”Perhaps that which you wish to hasten on, may be close behind you” The Hadith highlights the superiority of those Companions, as well those angels, who participated in the battle of Badr against the forces of Kufr. The Qur’an confirms the fact that the angels fought along with Muslims in this historic battle.

Surah Al Naml Ayat 65 Daily Qur’an & Hadith (12 March 2023)

English Translation of Al-Quran

[27].Surah Al-Naml [The Ants]

Ayat 65. Say: “None in the heavens and the earth knows the Ghaib (unseen) except Allah, nor can they perceive when they shall be resurrected.”

Tafseer of Surah Al Naml (The Ants) Ayat 65. Say: None in the heavens or on earth, except Allah, knows what is hidden: nor can they perceive when they shall be raised up (for Judgment). The existence of Allah is certain. But nothing else can be known with certainty to our knowledge. He has told us of the Hereafter, and therefore we know it is true. But those who do not believe in Allah—what knowledge or certainty can they have? Even when it is actually coming, they will not have the sense to perceive it.

.

English Translation of Hadith

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) said, “He who acquires a branch of the knowledge of astrology, learns a branch of magic (of which he acquires more as long as) he continues to do so.”

[Abu Dawud, Hadith # 3905].

Lesson : as mentioned above in Surah Al-Naml Ayat 65.“None in the heavens and the earth knows the Ghaib (unseen) except Allah” In this Hadith, astrology has been regarded as a part of magic. In Islam the learning of magic has been held equivalent to infidelity. Thus, it is evident that in Islam, astrology and soothsaying are highly dangerous, and learning them is a great sin. Astrology here stands for that pseudo-science on the basis of which future events are predicted with reference to the movements of stars. There is another science called astronomy by means of which timings of sunrise and sunset are calculated. This branch of science, however, is a genuine science because it is based on experiment and observation.
