DAY 29 : LET GO OF WHAT CAN’T BE CHANGED

“َ… and it may be that you dislike a thing which is good for you and that you like a thing which is bad for you. Allah knows but you do not know.”

[Surah Al Baqarah 2:216]

We meticulously plan things, writing down schedules, making appointments, ensuring that we know what is on the agenda for the next day or even the next month. To know what to expect and what is coming brings some semblance of security, of being in control.

Not knowing can feel vulnerable, even scary. We have a difficult time accepting that there are many things in life that we have no control over . It can make us feel powerless. As humans, we are naturally inclined towards happiness and a sense of security and stability, and anything that leads to the opposite is often avoided at all costs. By leaving everything up to Allah سبحانه و تعالى after we have done our best, we are essentially saying that even the worst outcome, even failure, sadness, or pain, is to be accepted with faith and forbearance.

This principle is difficult sometimes to apply. As Muslims, we know that we must be content with Allah سبحانه و تعالى’s decree, no matter what it may be. However, as humans, this is not always easy.

Therefore, we ask Allah ‏سبحانه و تعالى to help us trust him the most and rely totally upon his plan, even if doesn’t seem suitable to us in the moment, اللهم آمين.

Select Friends that lift you up

DAY 28:SELECT FRIENDS THAT LIFT YOU UP

Narrated Abu Musa: Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said, “The example of a good companion (who sits with you) in comparison with a bad one, is like that of the musk seller and the blacksmith’s bellows (or furnace);
from the first you would either buy musk or enjoy its good smell while the bellows would either burn your clothes or your house, or you get a bad nasty smell thereof.”

[Source: Sahih Bukhari, 2101, Book 34, Hadith 54]

Even if you strive to better yourself and purify your heart, it will prove to be very difficult if your company isn’t good. Just as some people can impact you positively, others can literally poison your heart.

Therefore, quality is so much more important than quantity when it comes to the friends you choose to surround yourself with. It’s completely normal for us to go through phases where our faith goes up and down, but if we keep good company and don’t isolate ourselves, we can prevent our faith from plummeting to the ground.

Choose to be around people who bring you closer to righteousness, people who remind you of Allah سبحانه و تعالى and encourage you to do good deeds, the ones who support you and believe in you in the good times, as well as the bad times.

May Allah سبحانه و تعالى help us maintain good relationships with those who are righteous, clean our roads off all the ones who might be bad for us and also help us choose those who would help us build our aakhirah well (hereafter), اللهم آمين.

Dont Ridicule Others

DAY 27 : DON’T RIDICULE OTHERS

“…O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one’s] faith. And whoever does not repent – then it is those who are the wrongdoers.”

[Surah Al Hujurat 49:11]

We’re aware – whether we admit to it or not – that we tend to talk of people a lot more than is required. Whether it be our families or our colleagues or our friends, we are engaged in spreading rumours and encouraging backbiting ignorantly. And for some people it has become so fixed into their subconscious that they do it without even realising it’s ill effects and understanding that it is a wrong and highly discouraged practise.

Islam teaches us to be polite and dignified in our character.

We shouldn’t participate in tarnishing people without knowing the truth. We should mind our tongues and keep ourselves away from all that doesn’t concern us. We need to be more worried about our own flaws and should be always working on improving ourselves.

May Allah سبحانه و تعالى sincerely guide us to rectify our relationships with our kith and kin and aid us in thinking the best of everyone, اللهم آمين

See Failure as an Opportunity

DAY 26:SEE FAILURE AS AN OPPORTUNITY

“So verily, with the hardship, there is relief, Verily, with the hardship, there is relief.”

[Surah Al Inshirah 94: 5-6]

One of the secrets of success is that we should not fear failures . Rather, we must pick up the sweet fruits hidden in defeat.

Failure is like a mirror, which shows us our weaknesses and defects accurately. Great and wise people consider failure as a bridge to victory.

Allah سبحانه و تعالى tells us that within one hardship, there are at least two reliefs. Allah سبحانه و تعالى is teaching you to look for the opportunities within your hardship. This skill, seeing the opportunity for growth , becomes invaluable during setbacks. While others are focusing on the failure, you are focusing on the opportunities.

Setbacks can actually fuel creativity when we are in the right frame of mind, because we are forced to think in new ways. But that is only when we wire our brains to know that this difficulty can be overcome. Some people always bounce back , but others always seem to crash down . And the difference between the two is the ability to see that a closed door somewhere means, at the very least, an open window somewhere else.

May Our Lord, Allah سبحانه و تعالى strengthen our imaan (faith) and tawakkal (trust) in Him to such a degree that no difficulty of any sort can break us, اللهم آمين.

Avoid Social Comparison

DAY 25: AVOID SOCIAL COMPARISON

Abu Hurairah narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Look to one who is lower than you, and do not look to one who is above you. For indeed that is more worthy (so that you will) not belittle Allah’s favors upon you.”

[Source: Jami’ At- Tirmidhi, Book 37, Hadith 2703, Grade: Sahih (Darussalam)]

The way we reflect on ourselves by looking at the lives of others can heavily influence our self-esteem. For the most part, this process can be an unhealthy one for a number of reasons.

The main reason is that we only see the good, especially on social media. A lot of us may also come from a culture where using someone else’s achievements as a measure for our own success has become a norm, this then causes us to try and seek validation from others.

Our thought processes, our level of imaan, level of anxiety, level of stress, level of confidence and our physical and mental endurance are unique to each and every single one of us. This means the tests we go through in this life will be unique . There is simply no use in using someone else’s life as a template for your own. ‘’Why can I not be like such and such a person?’’ This is the meaning of looking down on the blessing you have.

However, if you look at the person below you, you will be grateful because your situation is better than that of many. Therefore, the one in good health should look at the sick person and then praises Allah سبحانه و تعالى for granting him (or her) good health.

May Allah سبحانه و تعالى grant us the understanding to believe in who we are and truly reflect on our own strengths and weaknesses than be lost in comparing ourselves with others, اللهم آمين.

Look at the Brighter Side

DAY 24: LOOK AT THE BRIGHTER SIDE

Abu Yahya Suhaib bin Sinan (May Allah be pleased with him) reported that: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “ How wonderful is the case of a believer; there is good for him in everything and this applies only to a believer. If prosperity attends him, he expresses gratitude to Allah and that is good for him; and if adversity befalls him, he endures it patiently and that is better for him”.

[Source: Muslim, Book 1, Hadith 2]

Every situation has its positives and negatives or its pros and cons. Our effort should always be to look for the positive side of things no matter what situation or condition we may find ourselves in. This depends on our mindset.

If we are determined on finding all the negatives, then you will see all the negatives.

However, if your outlook is positive, you will see the benefits of a particular situation. Look at the half glass full instead of the half glass empty and have faith that Allah سبحانه و تعالى can open ways for you. Once you see the positive side, it will become much easier to accept the situation and work towards improving it.

One of the most essential qualities of a Muslim should be to never give up . Be brave, be patient and have faith. You will face difficulties on every step and corner of life and all you need to do is to keep your head held high. Keep trying with the faith that there are better things in store for you and that with your will power and dedication will pull through.

May Allah سبحانه و تعالى grant us the ability to be optimistic, focus on the good and be content with Qadr (fate) , اللهم آمين.

Exercise Self Discipline

DAY 23 : EXERCISE SELF DISCIPLINE

“…Verily, Allah will not change the condition of people as long as they do not change their state themselves…”

[Al-Ra’d 13:11]

We are born as individuals and will be standing in front of Allah ﷻ as individuals. So depending on the hands of others for our own change and behaviour is fruitless.

Islam gives serious importance to self-regulation and self-discipline. Acknowledging our shortcomings is an important step in the path of self-discipline.

Setting up goals and targets , committing to actions and trying to perfect our actions goes a great way into self-discovery. And it is impossible to do this without self-discipline.

Figure out your short comings and weaknesses. Start working on that. Discover your strengths and potential. Use them to improve yourself. Try to perfect yourself in ways loved by Allah ﷻ.

Take one step at a time and be consistent.

May Allah ﷻ help us all in perfecting our character, practising good habits and remaining committed upon our goals,

Make the Most of Now

DAY 22: MAKE THE MOST OF NOW

Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنه) narrated that,

The Prophet ﷺ said, “There are two blessings which many people lose: (They are) Health and free time for doing good.”

[Sahih al-Bukhari 6412]

Sometimes we are forced to realize the value of things only after we have lost them.

One such important yet underrated blessing is time. Things that are not said timely and actions not done in par with the clock always become the regretful burden a person carries to the future.

Most people today, especially the youngsters live in their own fictitious worlds unaware of the important things they are missing out in their life. Running behind work or running behind money/ women, have become a main purpose of life for many that they forget Allah ﷻ and the sole purpose of our creation.

Take life slow. Give a break. Spend time with real people. Give time to appreciate nature. Practice gratitude. Take care of yourself. Make the best use of now.

May Allah ﷻ help us always make the most of what we have, appreciate it’s availability and not waste His countless blessings,
