[41]. Ha-Mim_Al-Sajdah (Prostration) also known as Surah Fussilat [They Are Explained in Detail]
Ayat 17. And as for Thamud, Allah showed and made clear to them the Path of Truth (Islamic Monotheism) through Our Messenger, (i.e. showed them the way of success), but they preferred blindness to guidance, so the Sa’iqa (a destructive awful cry, torment, hit, a thunderbolt) of disgracing torment seized them, because of what they used to earn.
Ayat 18. And Allah saved those who believed and used to fear Allah, keep their duty to Him and avoid evil.
Tafseer of Surah Ha-Mim Al-Sajdah (or Surah Fussilat) Ayat 17 and 18. As to the Thamud, we gave them Guidance, but they preferred blindness (of heart) to Guidance: so the stunning Punishment of humiliation seized them, because of what they had earned. The story of Thamud usually goes with that of ‘Ad. Cf. 36:140-59; also 7:73- 79. “The stunning Punishment”: i.e., deafening noises like those of thunder and lightning; or the rumbling of a terrible earthquake. In 7:78, an earthquake is suggested. Ayat 18. But We delivered those who believed and practiced righteousness.
English Translation of Hadith
Hazrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ [SAWW](PBUH) said, “Those people who leave a gathering in which they have not remembered Allah, will conclude it as if it has foul odour similar to that of a rotten carcass of a donkey. And it will be a cause of grief to them.”
[Abu Dawud Hadith # 4855].
Lesson : as mentioned above “Thus We seal the hearts of the transgressors (those who disbelieve in the Oneness of Allah and disobey Him)” Messenger of Allah ﷺ [SAWW](PBUH) has warned us against refraining from the remembrance of Allah because most of the heart diseases are caused by this indifference, and because most of the sins are committed as a result of this indifference.
[41]. Ha-Mim_Al-Sajdah (Prostration) also known as Surah Fussilat [They Are Explained in Detail]
Ayat 16. So, Allah sent upon them furious wind in days of evil omen (for them) that Allah might give them a taste of disgracing torment in this present worldly life, but surely the torment of the Hereafter will be more disgracing, and they will never be helped.
Tafseer of Surah Ha-Mim Al-Sajdah (or Surah Fussilat) Ayat 16. So, Allah sent against them a furious Wind through days of disaster, that Allah might give them a taste of a Penalty of humiliation in this life; but the Penalty of a Hereafter will be more humiliating still: and they will find no help. The detailed story of ‘Ad and their besetting sin, and the preaching of their Prophet Hud to them will be found in 26:123-140; also 7:65-72. For the furious Wind, Cf. 54:19..
English Translation of Hadith
Hazrat Ibn Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ [SAWW](PBUH) visited a Bedouin who was sick. Whenever he visited an ailing person, he would say, “La ba’sa, tahurun in sha’ Allah [No harm, (it will be a) purification (from sins), if Allah wills].”
[Al-Bukhari Book 09, Chapter 93, Hadith # 562].
Lesson : as mentioned above in Surah Al-Kahf Ayat 24. “Except (with the saying), “If Allah wills!” According to this Hadith, a patient should be told that his disease will purge out his sins. To sit beside the sick, to comfort his heart and to say a few words of sympathy to him was the Prophet’s ﷺ [SAWW](PBUH) practice.
[41]. Ha-Mim_Al-Sajdah (Prostration) also known as Surah Fussilat [They Are Explained in Detail]
Ayat 15. As for ‘Ad, they were arrogant in the land without right, and they said: “Who is mightier than us in strength?” See they not that Allah, Who created them was mightier in strength than them. And they used to deny Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, revelations, etc.)!
Tafseer of Surah Ha-Mim Al-Sajdah (or Surah Fussilat) Ayat 15. Now the ´Ad behaved arrogantly through the land, against (all) truth and reason, and said: “Who is superior to us in strength?” What! did they not see that Allah, Who created them, was superior to them in strength? But they continued to reject Our Signs! Against (all) truth and reason: Cf. 7:33 . Their estimate of their own strength was greater than was justified by facts, but if they had all the strength which they arrogated to themselves, yet how could they stand before Allah?.
English Translation of Hadith
Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr bin Al-Aas (May Allah be pleased with them) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ [SAWW](PBUH) said, “Dajjal (the Antichrist) will appear in my Ummah and he will stay in the world for forty. I do not know whether this will be forty days or forty months or forty years. Allah will then send (Prophet) `Isa AS (Jesus), son of Maryam AS (Mary). `Isa AS will pursue him and slaughter him.
[Muslim].
Lesson : This Hadith clearly shows and prove that (Prophet) `Isa AS (Jesus), son of Maryam AS (Mary) is not crucified as Jews and Christian believe also In the above Hadith we find details about the signs of the Day of Resurrection, the appearance of Dajjal (Antichrist), the coming of Prophet `Isa – son of Maryam. All the important events which will happen during these times. Here, we also note the havoc of Dajjal who then finally the killing of them by the help of Allah and efforts of Prophet `Isa and his prayers..
[41]. Ha-Mim_Al-Sajdah (Prostration) also known as Surah Fussilat [They Are Explained in Detail]
Ayat 13. But if they turn away, then say (O Muhammad ﷺ [SAWW](PBUH): “I have warned you of a Sa’iqa (a destructive awful cry, torment, hit, a thunderbolt) like the Sa’iqa which overtook ‘Ad and Thamud (people).”
Ayat 14. When the Messengers came to them, from before them and behind them (saying): “Worship none but Allah” They said: “If our Lord had so willed, He would surely have sent down the angels. So indeed! We disbelieve in that with which you have been sent.”
Tafseer of Surah Ha-Mim Al-Sajdah (or Surah Fussilat) Ayat 13. But if they turn away, say thou: “I have warned you of a stunning Punishment (as of thunder and lightning) like that which (overtook) the ´Ad and the Thamud!” See verse 17 of this Surah. Ayat 14. Behold, the messengers came to them, from before them and behind them, (preaching): “Serve none but Allah.” They said, “If our Lord had so pleased, He would certainly have sent down angels (to preach). Now we reject your mission (altogether). ‘From before them and behind them”: i.e., from every side. They were warned from every point of view. Cf. l5:7, 6:8-9. The ‘Ad had more power and material civilization than the Pagan Arabs contemporary with the Prophet. But the greater the material civilization, the greater the arrogance as the besetting sin.
English Translation of Hadith
Hazrat Abu Said Al-Khudri and Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ [SAWW](PBUH) said, “If a person says: `La ilaha illallahu wallahu Akbar (There is no true god except Allah and Allah is Greatest)’, his Rubb responds to him and affirms: `(Yes!) There is no true god except I, and I am the Greatest.’ When he says: `La ilaha illallahu Wahdahu la sharika Lahu (There is no true god except Allah, the One, He has no partner).’ Allah (SWT) affirms: `(Yes!) There is no true god except I. I have no partner.’ When he says: `La ilaha illallahu Lahul mulku wa Lahul-hamdu (the sovereignty belongs to Him and all the praise is due to Him).’ He (SWT) affirms: `(Yes!) There is no true god except I, Mine is the praise and to Me belongs the sovereignty.’ When he says: `La ilaha illallahu wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa Billah (There is no true god except Allah, and there is no might and power but with Allah).’ He (SWT) affirms: `(Yes!) There is no true god except I, and there is no might and power but with Me.”’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ [SAWW](PBUH) added, “He who recites this during his illness and dies, will not be touched by the Fire (Hell).”
[At-Tirmidhi Hadith # 3430].
Lesson : as mentioned above “All the praises and thanks be to Allah!” But most of them know not” There is always a great certainty that Allah will respond to a supplication which springs from a sincere, veracious heart. One should, therefore, pray for a patient with full conviction and reassurance of heart. Moreover, the Prophet’s prayers have special effect and grace and therefore their original wordings should be uttered.
[41]. Ha-Mim_Al-Sajdah (Prostration) also known as Surah Fussilat [They Are Explained in Detail]
Ayat 11. Then He Istawa (rose over) towards the heaven when it was smoke, and said to it and to the earth: “Come both of you willingly or unwillingly.” They both said: “We come, willingly.”
Ayat 12. Then He completed and finished from their creation (as) seven heavens in two Days and He made in each heaven its affair. And We adorned the nearest (lowest) heaven with lamps (stars) to be an adornment as well as to guard (from the devils by using them as missiles against the devils). Such is the Decree of Him the All-Mighty, the All-Knower.
Tafseer of Surah Ha-Mim Al-Sajdah (or Surah Fussilat) Ayat 11. Moreover, He comprehended(4474) in His design the sky, and it had been (as) smoke: He said to it and to the earth: “Come ye together, willingly or unwillingly.” They said: “We do come (together), in willing obedience.” For istawa see n. 10:3. Cf. also 2:29 . From 79:30 it would appear as if the earth was spread out after the sky was made. In the present passage the creation of the earth and the evolution of life on our globe are mentioned first; and the making of the sky into the seven firmaments is mentioned last. The two statements are not inconsistent. It is stated here that when the sky was made into seven firmaments, it had existed previously as smoke, or vapor, or steam. The idea I derive from a collation of the relevant Quranic passages is that Allah first created primeval matter, which was as yet without order, shape, or symmetry. This state is called Chaos as opposed to Cosmos in Greek Cosmogony. The next stage would be the condensation of this primeval matter, into gases, liquids, or solids: on this subject no precise information is given us: it belongs to the realm of Physics. About the earth we are told of four stages or Days, and about the heavens, of two stages or Days. For Days. If these stages proceeded or proceed together in time, it is obvious that each stage as we know it on earth is half as long as each stage in the heavens. But these are questions of Physics, Astronomy, or Geology, not questions of Religion. I take this to mean that Allah’s design in creation was not to keep heaven and earth separate, but together, as we indeed are, being part of the solar system, and travelers through space, crossing the path of several comets. And all matter created by Allah willingly obeys the laws laid down for it. 12. So He completed them as seven firmaments in two Days, and He assigned to each heaven its duty and command. And We adorned the lower heaven with lights, and (provided it) with guard. Such is the Decree of (Him) the Exalted in Might, Full of Knowledge. For “Days”, which may include thousands of years, see 7:54, They refer to stages in the evolution of physical nature. In the Biblical cosmogony, (Gen. 1, and 2:1-7), which reflects old Babylonian cosmogony, the scheme is apparently to be taken literally as to days and is as follows: the first day Allah created light; the second, the firmament; the third, the earth and vegetation; the fourth, the stars and planets; the fifth, fish and fowl from the sea; and the sixth, cattle, creeping things, beasts on land, and man; on the seventh day He ended His work and rested. Our scheme is wholly different. (1) Allah did not rest, and never rests. “His Throne doth extend over the heavens and the earth, and He felt no fatigue in guarding and preserving them”; (2) Allah’s work has not ended; His activity still goes on 32:5; 7:54; (3) man in our scheme does not come in with land animals; his advent is much later; (4) our stages are not sharply divided from each other, as in the above scheme, where the stars and planets having been created on the fourth day, it is not intelligible how the first three days were counted, nor how vegetation grew on the third day. Our stages for earth and heavens are not in sequence of time for the heavens and the earth. Our six stages are broadly speaking, (1) the throwing off of our planet from cosmic matter; (2) its cooling and condensing; (3) and (4) the growth of vegetable and animal life; (5) and (6) the parallel growth of the starry realm and our solar system. Cf. 15:17, also 37:6-9. The transition from the third person (“He completed,” etc.) to the first person (“We adorned etc.) may be noted. The act of creation is an impersonal act: the act of adornment and guarding is a personal favour to Allah’s creatures.
English Translation of Hadith
Hazrat Abdullah bin `Amr bin Al-Aas (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ [SAWW](PBUH) said, “Verily, Allah does not take away knowledge by snatching it from the people, but He takes it away by taking away (the lives of) the religious scholars till none of the scholars stays alive. Then the people will take ignorant ones as their leaders, who, when asked to deliver religious verdicts, will issue them without knowledge, the result being that they will go astray and will lead others astray.”
[Al-Bukhari Book 01, Chapter 03, Hadith # 100]
Lesson: It is a sign of the nearness of the Day of Judgment that the world will be deprived of genuine religious scholars, and illiterate people will become leaders who will have neither the knowledge of the Qur’an nor that of the Hadith. Despite their ignorance of the Qur’an and the Hadith, they will be called Mujtahid (jurist entitled to independent reasoning) and Imam (leader) and will mislead people with their legal opinions and self-created problems. Besides urging us to acquire religious knowledge with a view to producing more scholars in the society, this Hadith also warns us against the ignorant self-styled `Ulama’. It also warns us against entrusting religious leadership to them.
[41]. Ha-Mim_Al-Sajdah (Prostration) also known as Surah Fussilat [They Are Explained in Detail]
Ayat 10. He (Allah) placed therein (i.e. the earth) firm mountains from above it, and Allah blessed it, and measured therein its sustenance (for its dwellers) in four Days equal (i.e. all these four ‘days’ were equal in the length of time), for all those who ask (about its creation).
Tafseer of Surah Ha-Mim Al-Sajdah (or Surah Fussilat) Ayat 10. He set on the (earth), mountains standing firm, high above it, and bestowed blessings on the earth, and measure therein all things to give them nourishment in due proportion, in four Days, in accordance with (the needs of) those who seek (Sustenance). Cf. 13:3 and 16:15. High above it: the highest mountains are 29,000 feet above sea level, and the lowest depths of the bottom of the ocean are 31,600 feet below sea level, so that the vertical difference between the highest and lowest points on the solid crust of the earth is about 11.5 miles. The highland areas are the main sources of the water supply in all the regions of the earth, and vegetable and animal life depend on water supply. Sa’ilin may mean either (1) those who seek, or (2) those who ask or enquire. If the former meaning-is adopted, the clause means that everything is apportioned to the needs and appetites of Allah’s creatures, If the latter, it means that the needs of enquirers are sufficiently met by what is stated here.
English Translation of Hadith
Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr bin Al-Aas (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: Messenger of Allah ﷺ [SAWW](PBUH) said, “Successful is the one who enters the fold of Islam and is provided with sustenance which is sufficient for his day’s needs, and Allah makes him content with what He has bestowed upon him.”
[Muslim Book 05, Chapter 40, Hadith # 2293].
Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah Ha-Mim_Al-Sajdah 10. “Allah blessed it, and measured therein its sustenance (for its dwellers)” The real success of a man will be measured by his being blessed with Divine mercy and forgiveness in the Hereafter, and this is contingent on Islam alone. If he lacks the wealth of Islam, all the worldly possessions will not ensure his success in the next world. This Hadith tells us that richness is not to be defined in terms of a lot of belongings, and that the real richness is gauged by the contentment of the soul.
[41]. Ha-Mim_Al-Sajdah (Prostration) also known as Surah Fussilat [They Are Explained in Detail]
Ayat 9. Say (O Muhammad ﷺ [SAWW](PBUH, : “Do you verily disbelieve in Allah Who created the earth in two Days and you set up rivals (in worship) with Him? That is the Lord of the ‘Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists).
Tafseer of Surah Ha-Mim Al-Sajdah (or Surah Fussilat) Ayat 9. Say: Is it that ye deny Him Who created the earth in two Days? And do ye join equals with Him? He is the Lord of (all) the Worlds. This is a difficult passage, describing the primal creation of our physical earth and the physical heavens around us. If we count the two Days mentioned in this verse, the four Days, mentioned in verse 10, and the two Days mentioned in verse 12, we get a total of eight Days, while in many passages the creation is stated to have taken place in six Days: see 7:54, and 32:4. The Commentators understand the “four Days” in verse 10 to include the two Days in verse 9, so that the total for the universe comes to six Days. This is reasonable, because the processes described in verses 9 and 10 form really one series. In the one case it is the creation of the formless matter of the earth; in the other case it is the gradual evolution of the form of the earth, its mountains and seas, and its animal and vegetable life, with the “nourishment in due proportion”, proper to each. Cf. also 15:19 -20.
English Translation of Hadith
Hazrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ [SAWW](PBUH) said, “The most truthful statement a poet has ever made is the saying of Labid: Everything besides Allah is vain.”
[Al-Bukhari Book 05, Chapter 58, Hadith # 181]
Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah Ha-Mim_Al-Sajdah 09. “Do you verily disbelieve in Allah Who created the earth in two Days and you set up rivals (in worship) with Him?” 1. We learn from this Hadith that to compose, recite and quote good verses, as evidence, is permissible. 2. The Verse of Labid, quoted in this Hadith, is the same effect as the verdict of the Noble Qur’an: “Whatsoever is on (the earth) will perish.” (55:26). This Verse accepts the eternity of the Afterlife and the transitory nature of this world.
[41]. Ha-Mim_Al-Sajdah (Prostration) also known as Surah Fussilat [They Are Explained in Detail]
Ayat 8. Truly, those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah Islamic Monotheism, and in His Messenger Muhammad ﷺ [SAWW](PBUH) and do righteous good deeds, for them will be an endless reward that will never stop (i.e. Paradise).
Tafseer of Surah Ha-Mim Al-Sajdah (or Surah Fussilat) Ayat 8. For those who believe and work deeds of righteousness is a reward that will never fail. But blessed are those who have Faith. They will have a Future and a Bliss that will never fail.
English Translation of Hadith
Hazrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ [SAWW](PBUH) said, “Allah, the Exalted, has said: `I have prepared for my righteous slaves what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and the mind of no man has conceived.’ If you wish, recite: `No person knows what is kept hidden for them of joy as a reward for what they used to do.”’ (32:17)
[Al-Bukhari Vol. 6, Chapter 60, Hadith # 302].
Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah Ha-Mim_Al-Sajdah 08. “For them will be an endless reward that will never stop (i.e. Paradise). About the gifts and pleasures of Jannah, here a Hadith has been stated in the Words of Allah. The subject matter is confirmed from the Verse of the Qur’an given in the text of the Hadith.
[41]. Ha-Mim_Al-Sajdah (Prostration) also known as Surah Fussilat [They Are Explained in Detail]
Ayat 6. Say (O Muhammad ﷺ [SAWW](PBUH), “I am only a human being like you. It is inspired in me that your Ilah (God) is One Ilah (God – Allah), therefore take the Straight Path to Him (with true Faith Islamic Monotheism) and obedience to Him, and seek forgiveness of Him. And woe to Al-Mushrikun (the disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah, polytheists, idolaters, etc. – see V.2:105). 7. Those who give not the Zakat and they are disbelievers in the Hereafter.
Tafseer of Surah Ha-Mim Al-Sajdah (or Surah Fussilat) Ayat 6. Say thou: “I am but a man like you: It is revealed to me by Inspiration, that your Allah is one Allah. so stand true to Him, and ask for His Forgiveness. “And woe to those who join gods with Allah, the reply is in effect: that the bringer of the Message is not an angel nor a god, and so there can and ought to be no barrier between him and his hearers; but he has been chosen to bring a Message of Truth and Hope to them; they should accept the Gospel of Unity, and by Repentance obtain Allah’s Grace and Forgiveness. There is nothing but pity for those who reject Truth, run after false worship, have no sympathy or charity for their fellow-men, and even deny that there is any future Life. Ayat 7. Those who practice not regular Charity, and who even deny the Hereafter..
English Translation of Hadith
Hazrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ [SAWW](PBUH) said, “Every one of my Ummah will enter Jannah except those who refuse”. He was asked: “Who will refuse?” He ﷺ [SAWW](PBUH) said, “Whoever obeys me, shall enter Jannah, and whosoever disobeys me, refuses to (enter Jannah)”.
[Al-Bukhari Book 9, Chapter 92, Hadith # 384]
Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah Ha-Mim_Al-Sajdah 06. “It is inspired in me that your Ilah (God) is One Ilah (God – Allah), therefore take Straight Path to Him (with true Faith Islamic Monotheism) and obedience to Him, and seek forgiveness of Him” The word Ummah here stands for the community which accepted the invitation of the Prophet ( ﷺ [SAWW](PBUH), that is to say, the people who on his call embraced Islam. Out of this community who follow him faithfully will go to Jannah.
[41]. Ha-Mim_Al-Sajdah (Prostration) also known as Surah Fussilat [They Are Explained in Detail]
Ayat 5. And they (Pagans of Makkah) say: “Our hearts are under coverings (screened) from that to which you (ﷺ [SAWW] (PBUH), invite us, and in our ears is deafness, and between us and you ﷺ [SAWW] (PBUH), is a screen, so work you ﷺ [SAWW] (PBUH), (on your way); verily, we are working (on our way).”
Tafseer of Surah Ha-Mim Al-Sajdah (or Surah Fussilat) Ayat 5. They say: “Our hearts are under veils, (concealed) from that to which thou dost invite us, and in our ears in a deafness, and between us and there is a screen: so, do thou (what thou wilt); for us, we shall do (what we will!)” The consequence of their willful rejection is that a distance is created between Revelation and those for whom it is meant; their ears become deaf, so that the voice falls fainter and fainter on their ears: they feel a bar between themselves and the Messenger who comes to teach them (Cf. 6:25 ). This is either a superiority complex adopting the sarcastic tone of an inferiority complex, or it expresses calculated indifference to spiritual teaching. In effect it says: “Our hearts and minds are not intelligent enough to understand your noble ideas, nor our ears sufficiently acute to hear their exposition: you and we are quite different; there is a gulf between us. Why worry about us? You go your way, and we shall go ours!”.
English Translation of Hadith
Hazrat Jabir (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: A Bedouin came to the Prophet ﷺ [SAWW] (PBUH) and asked him, “O Messenger of Allah ﷺ [SAWW] (PBUH), what are the two imperatives which lead to Jannah or Hell”. He ﷺ [SAWW](PBUH) replied, “He who dies without associating anything with Allah will enter Jannah, and he who dies associating partners with Allah will enter the Fire”.
[Muslim Book 01, Chapter 41, Hadith # 168]
Lesson: This Hadith also holds promise for a Muslim that being a Muslim and Muwahhid (believer in the Oneness of Allah) he will be at last sent to Jannah. Whether he goes straight to Jannah or after suffering the punishment of his sins in Hell, is a separate issue, but he will not remain in Hell forever. Eternal punishment in Hell is reserved only for pagans, polytheists, and infidels.
