Surah An Nahl – Ayah 67

*_Today’s Thought for the day is from Surah An-Nahl Ayah 67_*

*_And from the fruits of date palms and grapevines, you obtain intoxicants, and good provision. Verily in that there is a sign for people of understanding.(67)_*

The Ayah describes one more Grace and bounty from Allah Subhanahu wa taa’la.‼️ *After the description of the Milk in the previous Ayah now Allahﷻ describes juices and drinks from the fruits of date palm and grape vines and reminds them of HIS bounty.* _Allahﷻ has created many benefits for HIS slaves in the fruits of the palm tree and grapevine, such as various kinds of good and wholesome provision which is eaten raw and cooked, fresh and preserved food and drink that they make from their juice and steeped fruits . From them people make wine and other intoxicating drinks also, which were not forbidden at the time this sūrah was revealed._ *Later Allahﷻ abrogated the permissibility of all such intoxicants, and HE replaced that with good things such as nabeedh (a drink made by steeping dates and the like) and other kinds of delicious permissible drinks.* The way this Ayah is phrased implies that *intoxicants are unwholesome and not good provision,* which serves as a preliminary indication of their forthcoming prohibition. The Ayah describes the situation as it was in practice. _It does not imply that wines and intoxicants were permissible in earlier shariahs, even in the Bible it is considered as filthy and undesirable._

*_Act of the Day is:_* to understand and ponder upon the great blessings provided to us by Allahﷻ and remain grateful.‼️Incidentally it implies that the juice of the fruits of date palms and vines contains two things. *One is that which is pure and wholesome food for man and the other is that which turns into alcohol after it becomes rotten.* But it has been left to the choice of man to obtain pure healthy food from this providence or to drink it as intoxicant wine to excite him and make him loose his self control and his understanding. *Allahﷻ says this Ayah serves a sign for people of understanding* hence by drinking such intoxicants people loose their understanding which should be always be preserved and guarded. Hence if a man uses his understanding and common sense, he cannot fail to feel that his Lord is a great benefactor, who has created for him such excellent things, and when such a feeling is created in his heart, *he will accept the tawheed (monotheism)* to which Qur’an is inviting him.

*_May Allah Subhanahu wa taa’la grant us the ability to ponder and reflect upon the blessings and stay from HIS prohibitions. Aa’meen Ya’Rabbul Aa’lameen._*
